Intro: Me and my 'Green' Garden

Walking Lightly on Mother Earth, I take one gentle step at a time as I seek balance and well-being.

I strive toward self-sufficiency, and ecological balance. My 'Green' garden is a part of that effort. :)----:)-----:)-------:)--------------:)

I avoid pesticides and minimize use of other chemicals, as I use my garden produce in my home cooking. Much of what I grow is edible. I do also grow some ornamentals, though.

I have learned through trial and error that cool weather crops and plants such as carrots, peas, parsley, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach and lettuce do not grow well in my tropical climate.

My ’yard’ is a little, paved patio- roughly 10 feet x 10 feet. Since my garden is tiny, I stick to items suited to growing in 4 gallon or smaller containers. Nothing big, sprawling, -or heaven forbid, Giant- for me, thanks!! :)

Do you have a productive veggie garden using 4 gallon or smaller pots? If so, please drop me an email or a comment, to share your garden wisdom!!

I grow heirloom plants when possible. This helps preserve the diversity of plants on Earth. It helps reduce the number of valuable plant varieties that become extinct, and also improves my self-sufficiency as a gardener. If I can save seeds from one year to the next, I am less dependent on seed corporations.

I enjoy saving seeds, and trading my seeds with other gardeners. Sometimes I will also give away excess seeds to those who cannot afford to buy them, in exchange for the postage required to mail out seeds.

My GardenWeb seed trading list can be seen at: https://auth.gardenweb.com/members/grovespirit

Because I have a dog and there are toddlers next door I can’t grow toxic plants like lantana, datura, larkspur, brugmansia, etc.

As I learn more about blogging, I plan to post pictures of my garden plants to this blog. :)

More about me:

I support the Arbor Day Society. I love native plants, and pollution fighting trees, though I have no space to grow trees presently.

I hang clothes to dry, weather allowing. When it’s wet, I collect rainwater. I know how to Xeriscape. And I mulch, mulch, mulch to save water. I feed wild birds, and grow plants that help them survive.

I drive a hybrid car; I carpool too. I repair flawed clothes and give them to the homeless. I recycle and reuse what I can, no matter how silly I look. I even have a composting worm bin. Worms eat my junk mail and banana peels! :)

I avoid animal- tested products, which is one reason why most of the health and beauty products and cosmetics I use are homemade.
